Dr. Annie Andrews today launched DebateMeDarline.com, a new website tracking the time since she challenged Republican nominee Darline Graham to three televised debates across South Carolina and giving voters a way to join the call for Graham to debate.
Andrews first issued the challenge Aug. 12, proposing at least three televised, in-studio debates beginning in September and held across the Midlands, Lowcountry and Upstate. Three South Carolina television stations have already contacted the campaigns with invitations to host. Graham has yet to accept a debate.
“South Carolinians are deciding who will represent them in the United States Senate, and they deserve more than carefully scripted advertisements and campaign talking points,” Andrews said. “Three South Carolina stations are ready to host us. I am ready to debate anywhere in the state. The only question left is whether Darline Graham is willing to stand beside me and answer to the people she wants to represent.”
The website features a live clock tracking Graham’s response, Andrews’ original debate invitation and tools allowing South Carolinians to publicly call for a debate using the hashtag #DebateMeDarline.
Andrews asked both Republican runoff candidates to commit by Aug. 27 — within 48 hours of the runoff’s conclusion — so broadcasters could begin scheduling the debates. Her proposed series would give voters across South Carolina the opportunity to hear the candidates address rising costs, access to health care, rural hospital closures and other challenges facing families throughout the state.
“An open Senate seat is rare, and no candidate is entitled to hide from the voters behind television ads,” Andrews said. “The invitations are waiting. The clock is ticking. Debate me, Darline.”
