Democratic congressional candidate Mac Deford (pictured) today called on Nancy Lacore to clarify her position on Immigration and Customs Enforcement after Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie publicly stated that Lacore “told a large crowd she is absolutely for full funding of ICE and enforcing secure borders."
“For anyone who has followed this race, Haynie’s endorsement of Lacore’s immigration position should come as no surprise,” Deford said. “Nancy Lacore is a lifelong Republican whose campaign has been funded overwhelmingly by billionaire out-of-state donors with no history of supporting South Carolina candidates. She is precisely where Republicans who support Trump’s immigration agenda would expect her to be.”
Mayor Haynie made the comments on social media while defending Lacore's positions on immigration and border security.
"If Mayor Haynie's account is accurate, Democratic voters deserve to know," Deford said. "Congress recently passed legislation providing $75 billion in additional funding for ICE, more than the entire budget of the U.S. Marine Corps. Voters have a right to know that Nancy Lacore would give Donald Trump the thumbs up on how he’s using ICE."
Deford, a former U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement officer, said he supports secure borders and the rule of law, but drew a clear distinction between border security and the scale of enforcement expansion currently before Congress.
"I spent years enforcing federal law in the Coast Guard. I believe in secure borders and I believe in immigration laws that are applied fairly and humanely," Deford said. "But there is a difference between supporting border security and supporting a $70 billion expansion of federal immigration enforcement at a time when working families are struggling to afford housing, healthcare, and childcare."
