As the fall election season approaches, the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (BVRE) is calling on citizens to serve their community by becoming election workers. BVRE says hundreds more individuals are needed to help ensure a smooth, efficient, and secure voting process at polling locations across Charleston County on November 5th.
“This is an opportunity for citizens to play a vital role in one of the cornerstones of our democracy,” said Isaac Cramer, Executive Director of the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections. “By stepping up as an election worker, you are not only serving your community, but you are also helping to protect the integrity of our electoral process. We need civically engaged community members to maintain the gold standard of service in our county.”
Requirements for Election Workers:
- Must be a registered voter in South Carolina or at least 16 years old
- Be able to attend and complete mandatory training prior to Election Day
- Must make a commitment to non-partisanship and upholding election integrity
- Be able and willing to work the entirety of Election Day, including opening and closing polling locations
Pay:
- Election workers can earn up to $250, which includes pay for training and Election Day service
- Clerks can earn $410 for their leadership role, including training and Election Day duties
Training:
- Training will be provided by BVRE staff, and prior experience as an election worker is not required.
- Several types of roles must be filled by election workers of all abilities.

The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections is responsible for conducting all municipal, state, and federal elections that are held in Charleston County. BVRE also conducts outreach events with community members that encourage election education and participation.
