Clay Middleton, Democratic candidate for South Carolina House District 116, on Tuesday announced the endorsement of Charleston County School District Trustee Darlene Dunmeyer-Roberson.
Dunmeyer-Roberson, whose district overlaps with House District 116, emphasized the stakes of the race and the need for "experienced, community-rooted leadership in Columbia."
“This is about more than a seat,” said Dunmeyer-Roberson. “It is about our values, our voice, and our responsibility to lead with purpose. District 116 deserves a representative who understands our communities and is prepared to fight for them on day one.”
She pointed to Middleton’s record of service and leadership as key reasons for her support.
“Clay Middleton represents the very best of Democratic leadership—integrity, character, and a deep commitment to community. He has the discipline, experience, and judgment to lead, to build coalitions, and to deliver results for the people of this district,” Dunmeyer-Roberson said.
The two-term School Board Trustee also highlighted the importance of strong alignment between state leadership and local education systems.
“As a School Board Trustee, I see every day how decisions made in Columbia impact our classrooms, our teachers, and our children. We need a partner in the State House who understands the urgency of investing in public education and ensuring our communities are not left behind,” said Dunmeyer-Roberson.
Middleton said he is honored to have Dunmeyer-Roberson’s support and emphasized a shared focus on strengthening Lowcountry communities.
“As a father and a product of our public schools, I know how important it is to get the best possible start in life,” said Middleton. “Trustee Dunmeyer-Roberson understands the importance of working with leaders in Columbia to deliver for our children, families, and communities. That’s the kind of partnership we need. I’m running to keep taxpayer dollars in our public schools, raise teacher pay, and make sure every child has access to a high-quality education, so the Lowcountry continues to work for the families who built it.”
Middleton, a Lowcountry native, combat veteran, and public servant, is running on a platform focused on protecting communities, improving quality of life, and delivering practical solutions for families across District 116.
The Democratic primary for House District 116 will be held on June 9.
