With the fall elections just weeks away, the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (BVRE) continues to urge residents to serve their community by becoming election workers. Hundreds of positions remain open, and these roles are essential to ensuring that polling locations across Charleston County operate smoothly and securely on Election Day.
“Now more than ever, we need citizens who are committed to upholding the integrity of our elections,” said BVRE Executive Director Isaac Cramer. “Serving as an election worker is an important and patriotic way to participate in our democratic process. Your service will help protect the right to vote and ensure that every eligible ballot is counted with accuracy and efficiency.”
Requirements for Election Workers:
- Must be a registered voter in South Carolina or at least 16 years old
- Be able to attend and complete mandatory training prior to Election Day
- Must make a commitment to non-partisanship and upholding election integrity
- Be able and willing to work the entirety of Election Day, including opening and closing polling locations
Pay:
- Election workers can earn up to $250, which includes pay for training and Election Day service
- Clerks can earn $410 for their leadership role, including training and Election Day duties.
Training:
- Training will be provided by BVRE staff, and prior experience as an election worker is not required. • Several types of roles must be filled by election workers of all abilities.

Additionally, interested community members can drop in anytime during designated hours to learn more about this opportunity to serve. Drop-in hours will take place at election headquarters during the following windows:
- Wednesday, Sept. 25: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Thursday, Sept. 26: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Wednesday, Oct. 2: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections is responsible for conducting all municipal, state, and federal elections that are held in Charleston County. BVRE also conducts outreach events with community members that encourage election education and participation.
