The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (Charleston County Elections) announced the launch of the Voting Is Paw-some contest, a community initiative that celebrates civic engagement while supporting a local animal rescue.
The countywide competition encourages residents to stay connected with the electoral process while raising donations for Meowdog Animal Rescue in Mount Pleasant. By participating, community members can help local animals in need and show off their own pets at the same time.
From March 30 through April 30, 2026, Charleston County Elections will collect new or gently used items for the rescue, including pet beds, food, toys and treats. Monetary contributions will also be accepted via Venmo. Individuals who donate will receive a pet bandana as a thank-you gift.
Dog owners who wish to enter the contest can do so by taking a photo of their pet wearing the bandana and submitting it via direct message to Charleston County Elections on Instagram or Facebook. Photo entries will be accepted from noon on March 30 through noon on April 21, 2026. Full contest rules and eligibility requirements are available online.
After the entry period closes, the public can vote for their favorite photo on the Charleston County Elections Facebook page. The image receiving the most reactions will be declared the winner. Voting will be open from noon on April 24 through noon on April 28, 2026.
The winning dog will be announced May 1, 2026, and will receive a certificate and prize pack from Charleston County Elections.
“Building a stronger Charleston County starts with small acts of care, whether that’s showing up at the polls or supporting community partners who make our county brighter. Our ongoing work with Lucy G. Beckham High School has helped students learn how elections function, why civic participation matters, and the impact informed voters have on local communities. With the school’s connection to Meowdog through its veterinary science program, this contest provides a meaningful way to bring foundational lessons to life,” said Charleston County Elections Executive Director Isaac Cramer. “By engaging students, families and voters in a fun, community-driven initiative, we’re encouraging the next generation to stay involved, stay informed and recognize the role they play in shaping our community’s future.”
