The Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina released the following statement in support of South Carolina State University Students:
"The Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, representing the largest predominantly African American faith constituency in our state, stands in firm and unwavering support of the students of South Carolina State University who exercised their constitutional right to engage in peaceful, nonviolent protest.
"The tradition of nonviolent demonstration is deeply rooted in both our faith and our history. From the Civil Rights Movement to present-day struggles for justice, young people have often led the charge in calling our nation to live up to its highest ideals. We affirm that the students of South Carolina State University acted within this sacred and democratic tradition.
"We are deeply troubled by the characterization of these students as a 'mob.' Such language is not only inaccurate—it is dangerous. Words matter. In a climate where rhetoric can incite hostility and embolden harmful actors, labeling peaceful student protesters in this manner risks placing them in harm’s way and undermines their dignity as scholars, citizens, and children of God.
"Disagreement is not disorder. Advocacy is not aggression. And peaceful protest is not a threat—it is a cornerstone of American democracy.
"As people of faith, we are called to 'speak truth to power,' to defend the marginalized, and to ensure that justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream. We therefore call upon all elected officials and public leaders to engage with students and citizens respectfully, to refrain from inflammatory language, and to uphold the principles of civility and truth.
"We further encourage the leadership of South Carolina State University and state officials to foster dialogue that is constructive rather than dismissive, and to honor the voices of students who are shaping the future of our state and nation.
"The Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina remains committed to justice, equity, and the protection of all people—especially our young people who dare to stand for what is right.
"Let us move forward not with division, but with understanding. Not with harmful rhetoric, but with healing words. And not with fear, but with faith in the power of peaceful change."
