On Monday, Sept. 1, the 50501 People’s Movement will hold an event along Remount Road in Hanahan near Yeamans Hall Road. The Labor Day gathering is one of more than 2,000 “Workers Over Billionaires” events being organized across the U.S. by labor and community groups. The event. begins at 10 a.m.
Organizers describe the movement as "working people coming together to stop what they call a billionaire takeover — not just through the ballot box or the courts, but through collective action." They say they are fighting for a country that is fair, just, equitable and free for all — not just a chosen few.
“At a time when Trump and his billionaire friends are turning our government into a slush fund for the wealthy, gutting Medicaid, firing federal workers and ravaging our families through ICE raids, we are coming together to demand ‘workers over billionaires,’” organizers said in a statement.
The movement calls for prioritizing public schools over private profits, health care over hedge funds, and affordable housing over homelessness.
“On Labor Day, our strategy is simple: build a movement by and for America’s working class,” organizers said.
The 50501 People’s Movement describes itself as uniting human rights, voting rights, civil rights, labor rights, immigrant rights and access to health care in an effort to reclaim power from corporate elites.
Following the event, participants are invited to join local union representatives and their families for a barbecue at the Communication Workers of America Union Hall, 1269 Yeamans Hall Road in Hanahan.
Organizers stressed that all 50501 events are committed to nonviolent action and ask participants to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with their values.
