On Saturday, December 14, 2024, the national nonprofit organization Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) invites the community to a Volunteer Day event to help landscape Army SGT Matt Watters’ future specially adapted custom home.
The new home for SGT Watters, who was severely injured in Iraq, has more than 40 adaptations including lower countertops and roll-under sinks. The public is asked to use the shuttle location at Centerpoint Community Church - 2160 GA-21, Rincon, GA 31326. Shuttling begins at 9:00 a.m. and the landscaping begins at 10 a.m.
On June 11, 2003, Sergeant Watters, a team leader, was on a raid on a terrorist training camp in Western Iraq when he was struck in the leg by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG). He lost his left leg below the knee and sustained severe damage to his right leg and left arm.
The Volunteer Day is an event hosted by HFOT for the community to landscape the home by laying sod and planting trees and flowers in preparation for the Veteran’s homecoming. SGT Watters will receive his home at a Key Ceremony event soon.
Volunteers are asked to bring gardening gloves and will receive an HFOT T-Shirt and lunch.
Homes For Our Troops relies on contributions from donors, supporters, and corporate partners for the building of each Veteran’s home. Currently there are 69 HFOT home-build projects for injured Veterans in various stages of completion nationwide. Community members may hold fundraisers or make donations.
