Trident United Way’s Berkeley County FoodShare program has been awarded a generous $25,000 grant from the HCA Healthcare Foundation through its Health Equity Catalyst Grant Program. This funding, provided by the Healthier Tomorrow Fund, will support expanded access to fresh fruits and vegetables for residents in Berkeley, Dorchester and Charleston counties, addressing food insecurity and promoting healthier eating habits.
Locally, Trident Medical Center, Summerville Medical Center, Colleton Medical Center and Live Oak Mental Health & Wellness & Wellness are part of the HCA Healthcare Network.
“The work that Trident United Way does is critical to the personal health of thousands of residents in the Charleston region,” said Jeff Wilson, president of Trident Health and CEO of Trident Medical Center. “Healthy people make healthy communities. We’re honored to support Trident United Way’s FoodShare program as they continue their life-enriching and hope-restoring work.”
Thanks to this grant from HCA Healthcare, Trident United Way is able to ensure our neighbors have the nutritious food they need to lead healthier lives. “This partnership is a vital step in building a more resilient and healthy community,” said Natasha Chatman, Chief Impact Officer at Trident United Way. “We are so grateful for generous support.”
In addition to the grant, HCA Healthcare sent a team of volunteers to pack 160 FoodShare Fresh Food Boxes, directly supporting local families. This hands-on involvement underscores HCA Healthcare's commitment to making a lasting impact on health equity in the community.
The FoodShare Tri-County Program is at the heart of Trident United Way’s mission to alleviate food insecurity. In 2024, the program distributed 57,196 pounds of fresh produce across the Tri-County region. Since its inception, FoodShare Tri-County has provided over 5,000 food boxes, providing families with access to affordable produce. With this new funding, the program plans to increase food box distribution by 50% and further expand its reach into Berkeley County, while continuing to serve Dorchester and Charleston counties.
