The Charleston Museum is pleased to announce that it has been reaccredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM).
Recognized as the field’s gold standard for museum excellence for 55 years, AAM accreditation, which occurs every 10 years, signifies a museum’s quality and credibility to the entire museum community, to governments and outside agencies, and to the museum-going public. The Accreditation Program ensures the integrity and accessibility of museum collections, reinforces the educational and public service roles of museums, and promotes good governance practices and ethical behavior. To earn accreditation, a museum submits a self-study questionnaire and key operational documents for evaluation, then undergoes a site visit by a two-person team of peer reviewers. Of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, 1,129 are currently accredited.
“Achieving reaccreditation from the American Alliance of Museums is a powerful affirmation of the Museum’s mission to preserve and share the history of the Lowcountry, as well as a testament to the dedication of our exceptional staff,” said Director Carl Borick. “We are honored to continue serving as a trusted voice and cherished landmark for our community and visitors from around the world.”
Reaccreditation reinforces The Charleston Museum’s role as a leading steward of the Lowcountry’s history and natural heritage. As it looks to the future, the Museum remains committed to upholding the highest professional standards while expanding access to its collections, exhibitions, and educational programs.
