The Charleston Museum, America’s First Museum, was recently named one of Condé Nast Traveler's 51 Best Museums in the United States.
The article highlights a standout museum in each state, with The Charleston Museum as the choice for South Carolina. Among those included are The National Museum of American History in Washington D.C., The Ellis Island National Museum in New Jersey, The Breakers in Rhode Island, and The American Museum of Natural History in New York.
Condé Nast Traveler praises Charleston Museum’s refreshing approach to sharing Lowcountry history. The publication notes, “as museums go, there’s nothing stuffy or old-school about this one, even though it just celebrated its 252nd year of existence. The formidable modern structure houses relics from Charleston’s past, and weaves a story from the 18th century to the present. Visitors wander through history, both cultural and natural, listening to recordings by locals. It’s a great place to ground yourself, and to catch your breath in the museum’s restful inner courtyard.”
“We are deeply honored to be recognized by Condé Nast Traveler as the best museum in South Carolina,” said Director Carl Borick. “We are in great company on this list, and it is a testament to the dedication of our staff, depth of our collections, richness of our community’s history, and the Museum’s commitment to providing a meaningful experience to visitors and locals alike.”
