The South Carolina State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (SCDAR) is proud to announce that Charleston Museum Director Carl Borick has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Bobby Gilmer Moss History Award, recognizing outstanding achievement in the research and preservation of South Carolina history.
Borick has dedicated his career to researching, interpreting, and preserving South Carolina history. As director of The Charleston Museum, America’s first museum, he has prioritized advancing scholarship, expanding public engagement with the state’s past, and strengthening preservation initiatives.
“The Bobby Gilmer Moss History Award represents our deep commitment to honoring those who preserve and promote South Carolina’s story,” said Anne Allen, SCDAR State Historian. “We are proud to recognize Carl for his meaningful and lasting contributions to our state’s historical record.”
A respected historian and author, Borick is widely recognized for his Revolutionary War expertise and his commitment to making South Carolina’s complex and compelling story accessible to broad audiences.
“I am honored and grateful to receive this recognition,” said Borick. “Preserving and sharing our state’s history has been a key focus of my career, and I made extensive use of Dr. Moss’ work in research for my own books on the Revolutionary War in South Carolina. I’m grateful to contribute to ensuring that South Carolina’s stories continue to inform and inspire future generations.”
The award was presented during the SCDAR’s annual awards banquet at their state conference in Columbia on March 21. The event brought together members from across South Carolina to celebrate excellence in historical research and preservation, including other notable attendees to the conference were General Colby Broadwater, The Honorable Shiva Hodges, Vice Chief of the Wassamasa Tribe Joshua Shumak, and Mayor of Columbia Daniel Rickenmann.
The Nathanael Greene Chapter nominated Carl Borick and Regent Carol Bollenback said “we are very excited that you were chosen as this year's recipient.”
Established in 2002, the Bobby Gilmer Moss award honors individuals whose scholarship, teaching, authorship, and preservation efforts have made significant contributions to advancing the understanding of South Carolina’s historical legacy. The inaugural award was presented to noted historian Dr. Bobby Gilmer Moss, for whom the honor is named.
