Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum will host South Carolina Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver on Wednesday, March 25, joining students aboard the USS Yorktown as part of National Medal of Honor Day observances.
Students from Lucy Beckham High School’s JROTC program will participate in an educational program with Ellen Weaver in the Harbor Room at 11:15 a.m., where they will engage directly with the state’s education leader while exploring themes of civic responsibility, military service, and the importance of preserving history. During their visit, students will also take part in the Patriots Point Flight Academy and tour the Medal of Honor Museum aboard the Yorktown.
During the afternoon program, Weaver will join Medal of Honor recipient General James E. Livingston for a private conversation focused on leadership and the meaning behind the nation’s highest military award.
“Medal of Honor Day is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary courage and sacrifice shown by those who have served our nation,” said Allison Hunt, Executive Director. “Welcoming Superintendent Weaver and students aboard the USS Yorktown for this program creates a meaningful opportunity to connect education with living history.”
The visit coincides with Medal of Honor March at Patriots Point, a month-long tribute presented in partnership with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society to honor recipients of the nation’s highest award for valor in combat. As part of the day’s observances, Medal of Honor experts will also be on site from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to share insights into the history and significance of the medal, offering visitors additional opportunities to learn about the extraordinary acts of courage it represents
