Three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms. On average, residents have less than five minutes to escape a home when a fire starts. The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.
To reduce injuries and death to North Charleston residents, North Charleston Fire Department has partnered with the American Red Cross of the South Carolina and Fire Safe SC to conduct a smoke alarm blitz to install free smoke alarms to residents of Hawthorne City Community. Hawthorne City Community is composed of 354 manufactured homes. Teams of volunteers and firefighters will be going door-to-door, meeting with families to test and install smoke alarms, and educate on fire safety to reduce their fire risks.
Details:
- When: Saturday, March 29th from 9am – 4pm
- Where: Hawthorne City Community - 1990 Hawthorne Dr, North Charleston, SC 29406)
For residents not in Hawthorne City Community, North Charleston Fire Department has a smoke alarm program offered year around. Residents can schedule an appointment to have firefighters come to their home to assess their fire risk and receive free smoke alarms when needed.
