On Monday, more than 100 members of the senior class at Porter-Gaud will gather for Senior Day of Caring. Students will begin the day packaging 25,000 meal kits for local food banks in partnership with Harvest Pack, a Minneapolis-based food aid nonprofit.
In the afternoon, students will spend time volunteering at 10 different nonprofits across the Lowcountry, including Water Mission, James Island Outreach Center, Pet Helpers Animal Shelter, Our Lady of Mercy Outreach Center, Charleston Habitat for Humanity, Fisher House, Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding, Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary, and Charleston Area Senior Center.
Now in its 16th year, the Annual Senior Day of Caring started with the goal of helping communities across the Lowcountry in a direct and tangible way. Throughout the school year, Porter-Gaud students work with more than 30 local, national, and international nonprofits.
“As a school, our mission is to inspire lives of purpose, learning, and service through cultivating each student’s God-given potential,” says Gretchen Tate, Porter-Gaud’s Director of Community Service. “This day is just one example of how we live out our mission and honor the legacy of our school’s founder, the Reverend Dr. Anthony Toomer Porter. We hope the projects we have planned for this day will allow us to make a meaningful impact on those living in the Charleston community and beyond.”
