Pet Helpers announced today that Charleston County will sponsor adoption fees for all adoptable animals four months of age and older for Charleston County residents through June 30, 2026. Some exclusions may apply based on medical or behavioral considerations.
The initiative comes at a critical time as Pet Helpers continues facing significant overcrowding challenges. The shelter, which was originally built with 39 canine kennels, is currently caring for more than 90 dogs onsite, with additional dogs placed in foster homes throughout the community. Like shelters across the country, Pet Helpers continues to experience increased stray intake, overcrowding, and slower adoption trends.
By removing adoption fees for many adult pets, Charleston County and Pet Helpers hope to encourage more families to consider adoption and help create much-needed lifesaving space for animals currently waiting for homes.
“Animal welfare is truly a community effort, and meaningful change only happens when all of us work together,” said Melissa Susko, Executive Director of Pet Helpers. “We are incredibly grateful to Charleston County for extending this initiative and helping remove barriers to adoption for so many wonderful animals in our care.”
Susko emphasized that while adoption fees may be waived for eligible pets, Pet Helpers will continue following the thoughtful adoption procedures and counseling process the organization has always prioritized.
“These are not simply free animals being handed out,” Susko said. “Every adoption will continue to include our standard adoption counseling, support, and matchmaking process to help ensure the best possible fit for both the animal and the adopter. Our goal has always been creating successful, lasting placements that benefit both pets and families.”
Pet Helpers currently has a wide variety of dogs and cats available for adoption, many of whom have been waiting weeks or even months for a home. Community members interested in adopting are encouraged to visit Pet Helpers during operating hours: 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily (Closed Memorial Day)
In addition to adoption, Pet Helpers encourages the public to support local animal welfare efforts through fostering, volunteering, reclaiming lost pets, and spreading awareness about adoptable animals currently in need of homes.
