Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10624 will host a free memorial service aboard the historic aircraft carrier USS Yorktown on Sunday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., honoring the twenty-five known South Carolinians who were killed in the 1941 Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor.
The museum invites members of the community aboard the USS Yorktown for a time to reflect, remember, and honor those who lost their lives on that fateful day. Guests attending the ceremony will receive complimentary museum admission and parking.
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese used more than 350 aircraft during the 75-minute attack on the Pearl Harbor Naval Station in Hawaii. In total, 2,403 people were killed, which included 2,335 U.S. service members and 68 civilians. More than 300 U.S. aircraft and 19 Navy ships were destroyed or damaged.
The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m., and include a wreath-laying, tolling of a bell, and traditional gun salute. Additionally, historical re-enactors will be onsite for a special WWII re-enactment for guests.
