On Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum will offer free admission to all veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their immediate family members. At 3 p.m., the museum will host student musicians from school districts across the Lowcountry as part of Taps Across America—a national initiative that invites musicians to perform Taps in honor of fallen service members.
In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday to take place annually on the last Monday in May to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. To learn more about the story of TAPS, read Jari Villanueva’s “24 Notes That Tap Deep Emotion.”
“It is an honor to host local musicians as they perform TAPS in tribute to the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country,” said Allison Hunt, Executive Director of Patriots Point. “This simple yet powerful tradition reminds us of the true meaning of Memorial Day and allows our community to come together in solemn remembrance and gratitude.”
Local musicians of all levels are invited to perform TAPS from the USS Yorktown Flight Deck with their instrument of choice. Registered participants will receive a free shirt and museum admission will be waived for the musicians and their immediate families. Visit www.patriotspoint.org for information on how to participate in this year’s TAPS performance at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum.
