Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, in partnership with the Town of Mount Pleasant, will host a special Black History Month presentation on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, aboard the historic USS Yorktown. The event is free to visitors and will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Titled “The Ford Expedition, A Lowcountry Story,” the presentation will feature Major General Leo V. Williams III, who will share his compelling personal journey and the inspiration behind the naming of one of America’s most iconic vehicles — the Ford Expedition. Drawing on his extensive experience in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and his work in the automotive industry, Major General Williams will discuss how the name Expedition serves as a tribute to the Marines’ legacy of service, exploration, and adventure.
In addition to the featured presentation, Patriots Point’s Historian Colby Causey will discuss the military service of African American sailors aboard the USS Yorktown (CV-10) during World War II, as well as the newest exhibit highlighting African American naval service, currently on display aboard the Yorktown. The exhibit explores the history and legacy of the USS Mason (DE-529), the first overseas combat naval vessel crewed predominantly by African American sailors in the U.S. Navy.
“We are proud to partner with the Town of Mount Pleasant to honor Black History Month with a presentation that highlights both history and personal story,” said Allison Hunt, Executive Director. “This event underscores the rich contributions of African Americans to our nation’s military and cultural heritage.”
This presentation is presented in partnership with the Town of Mount Pleasant, reflecting a shared commitment to community engagement and honoring history.
