In recognition of Women’s History Month, the North Charleston Fire Department proudly celebrates the achievements of Andrea Mazurek, the first African American woman in department history to attain the rank of captain.
Mazurek’s accomplishment marks a significant milestone not only in her distinguished career, but also in the continued progress of the fire service. In a profession where trust, leadership and safety are paramount, representation matters. Her promotion reflects both her individual excellence and the department’s commitment to fostering leadership that reflects the community it serves.
Mazurek began her career in the fire service in 2007. Through dedication, perseverance and a commitment to excellence, she was promoted to engineer in 2021. In 2025, she achieved the rank of captain, breaking barriers and setting a powerful example for future generations of firefighters.
“Captain Mazurek’s journey is a testament to hard work, resilience and leadership,” said Joseph Munn, fire chief of the North Charleston Fire Department. “Her promotion represents not only her personal achievement, but also the strength and progress of our organization. She is a leader our department is proud of and a role model for those who will follow.”
“Representation is more than visibility — it builds trust, strengthens teams and inspires the next generation of leaders,” said Christan Rainey, deputy chief of professional development. “Captain Mazurek has earned this moment through years of dedication and service, and her achievement reinforces our commitment to developing leaders who reflect and serve our community at the highest level.”
The North Charleston Fire Department is proud to honor Mazurek’s service and recognizes the vital contributions of all women who serve as first responders. Their courage, compassion and commitment continue to strengthen the fire service and the communities they protect.
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, the department reaffirms its commitment to recognizing excellence, promoting inclusion and supporting those who answer the call to serve.
