On Friday morning, the Mount Pleasant Police Department recognized two citizens and four officers with Lifesaving Awards for their actions in rescuing a woman who crashed her vehicle into a retention pond after suffering a medical emergency on May 30, 2026.
Chief Mark Arnold and Lt. Trevor Simmons presented the Citizen Lifesaving Award to Katie Funk and Kelsea Retchin. Both jumped into the water at The Meridian off U.S. Highway 17 when the vehicle plunged into the pond just after 6 p.m., attempting to help the unresponsive driver until police arrived within minutes of the first 911 call.
Sgt. Connor Byrne, Sgt. Brad Strode, Cpl. Robert Mathewes and Pfc. Nicholas Jobst received Lifesaving Award pins for their actions.
The woman rescued that night attended the ceremony to thank and honor those who saved her life.
