Mental Health America of South Carolina will present a thoughtfully curated anthology of poems by contributors across the state of South Carolina whose lives have been touched by mental health concerns.
Entitled “Inside and Out,” this anthology of poetry has just been released in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month. Curated and edited by Charleston-based writer and clinical social worker Heather Rose Artushin, LISW-CP, the collection boasts poems authored by Elizabeth Robin, Abby Duran, Christian Morant, Hunter Barrow, and many more.
Art therapist, Dianne Vincent, contributed the cover art for this volume, a painting entitled, "A Closer Look.” Vincent said, “I was inspired to paint this orange lily in a very close-up view, using it as a metaphor for focusing on my emotional interior.”
From seasoned poets to first-time writers, “Inside and Out” offers an authentic look at what it's like to struggle with mental health. Exploring themes of depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, abuse in relationships, and much more, in this volume South Carolina writers courageously share their lived experiences with mental health struggles.
“Together, we reflect the resilience and strength that comes with caring for our mental health, and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, knowing we all struggle, face dark times in our lives, and need just the right words to carry us through,” wrote Artushin. “May these words offer hope, solidarity, and a deep understanding to all those who read them.”
