In recognition of American Heart Month, the American Heart Association, devoted to a world of healthier lives for all, and CREW Charleston, a leading network for women in commercial real estate, are helping more people feel confident and capable in responding to cardiac emergencies.
At the February CREW Charleston Luncheon, Kelly Guerrero, physician assistant, and Katie Logan, nurse practitioner, both from Roper St. Francis Healthcare, led a Hands-Only CPR™ demonstration. The session was part of a community spotlight on the Association’s vital work in Charleston. In addition to the live demonstration, all attendees were given American Heart Association CPR Anytime kits, enabling them to practice CPR at home, in the office, and with friends or family. The kits were provided with support from Roper St. Francis Healthcare.
“We are thankful we were able to provide this critical resource to our members,” said Elizabeth Russell, CREW Charleston chapter president. “Our mission is to advance women in commercial real estate, and that includes prioritizing health. Learning the life-saving skill of CPR is just one way we’re working to empower our members both professionally and personally.”
According to the American Heart Association, nine out of every 10 people who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital die, in part because they do not receive immediate CPR more than half of the time. Women are often less likely to receive bystander CPR because rescuers often fear accusations of inappropriate touching, sexual assault, or inuring the victim. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.
“We are thrilled to have more lifesavers in the Charleston community,” said Katie Schumacher, executive director of the American Heart Association, Charleston. “Our hope is that each attendee will take their kit back to their workplace or share it with family, turning countless bystanders into lifesavers. Every second matters in an emergency.”
