On Thursday, July 17, a 50501 People’s Movement event will take place at the Circular Congregational Church from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This is part of the GOOD TROUBLE LIVES ON National Day of Action, planned to coincide with the anniversary of the passing of Congressman John Lewis.
Here's what the group says the event is about:
"At this time in our nation’s history, we need to make some good trouble, and Lewis is the perfect role model. We are facing the most brazen rollback in civil liberties in generations. For example, attacks on voting rights, gutting of essential services, and the tearing apart of families and disappearing of our neighbors by men wearing masks.
The event will begin with a vigil to honor Lewis and his legacy, followed by speakers on non-violent resistance, how we can support immigrants, and the power of boycotts. The lineup includes:
- Sam Skardon, a past legislative aide for John Lewis
- John Reynolds, who worked as an SCLC organizer with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and was a lifelong friend of John Lewis. They were both from Troy Alabama and were known as “the boys from Troy.”
- Will McCorkle who is on the front lines of the fight for just, legal, and humane treatment of our immigrant neighbors in Charleston.
- Reverend Adam Shoemaker, Rector at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church and Co-Chair of Everyday People, a movement aimed at demonstrating our collective power through boycotts.
Lead organizer Tracey Tapp says, “The purpose of this gathering is to mobilize people to make good trouble. It’s not an exaggeration to say that our democracy is dying. A dictator is in the Whitehouse, Congress is complicit, and the courts are caving. It’s up to We The People to stop it.”
Because seating is limited, organizers ask that people interested in attending RSVP on mobilize.us – here is the direct link to the event listing: https://mobilize.us/s/Pt7L2I
The event will be livestreamed from the Circular Congregational Church YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/@CircularChurch)
Hundreds of Good Trouble events will be taking place across the country on July 17th

A core principle of all 50501 events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.
