LendingTree says their research has determined that three metro areas in South Carolina rank among the places with the highest percentage of residents delinquent on debt.
The team at LendingTree analyzed data from over 300,000 anonymized credit reports to understand debt delinquency across the country. They were able to find how many Americans are late on their debt payments, which type of debt they’re behind on, and which metro areas have the most residents struggling to pay their debt. Here’s a quick look at what they found:
- Columbia, SC has the 5th-highest percentage of residents delinquent on debt, nationwide. 44.6% of residents in Columbia are delinquent on debt. 42.4% of McAllen residents are seriously delinquent (overdue by 90 days or more).
- Two other South Carolina metro areas rank among the metros with the highest percentage of residents delinquent on debt. Greenville (9th) and Charleston (18th).
- Nationwide, 29.6% of Americans in the 100 largest metros are behind on debt payments. These debts include credit cards, auto loans, personal loans, mortgages, student loans, and others.
- Millennials are most likely to be behind on debt payments, with over a third of millennials (36.7%) late on at least one account payment. Millennials are the most likely to be late on paying their credit card accounts (19.6%), car payments (7.8%), and personal loans (8.3%).
