The Leadership Dorchester Class of 2026 has announced its project: a community-funded outdoor pavilion for The ARK of SC.
Leadership Dorchester, a program of the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce, brings together local leaders each year, with participants tasked to develop a sustainable project that benefits the community or supports a local nonprofit. The Ark, a Summerville-based nonprofit, has served families living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) for more than 30 years.
The project, selected by the class, will run from April through November 2026. All funds raised will go directly toward building a permanent outdoor gathering and activity space at The ARK's facility located at 502 W. 5th North St. in Summerville.
About The ARK of SC
The ARK of SC helps individuals and families cope with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia through respite care, family support groups, educational workshops, caregiver consultations, resource referrals, and community development. The ARK's programs are designed to combat social isolation, sedentary lifestyle, and limited physical activity, with a core emphasis on outdoor programming and community connection.
Programs served by The ARK include:
· Navigation Club (Early Memory Loss Program) — focused on maintaining brain health through socialization, mental agility, physical activity, mindfulness, and nutrition.
· Social Respite Program — provides caregivers a much-needed break while their loved one participates in a safe, structured social environment.
Caregiver Education and Appreciation — free programs covering the basics of dementia,
self-care, action planning, end-of-life preparation, and more.
Project Overview: Outdoor Covered Pavilion Build
The goal of the project is to provide a safe, usable outdoor space that expands and enhances program services for both participants living with memory loss and their caregivers.
The project includes the following construction elements:
· 25’x35’ ft. Outdoor covered pavilion
· Ceiling fan(s) and Outdoor lighting for the pavilion and surrounding exterior space
· Paved walkway from the access ramp to the pavilion
Once complete, the pavilion will support a wide range of programming, including outdoor cognitive and social activities such as cooking demonstrations, art activities, gardening, and group exercise, as well as structured physical activities such as yoga classes, dance, cornhole, and more. The space will also allow The ARK to simultaneously serve a loved one in outdoor programming while their caregiver attends an on-site education series, a capability The ARK has not previously been able to offer.
