Emeline and The Ryder Hotel, part of the Makeready collection, are pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Herbst as Area Managing Director, bringing more than three decades of hospitality leadership to the two design-forward Charleston properties. Known for his thoughtful, hands-on management style and ability to inspire teams, Herbst will oversee operations and strategic direction while continuing to elevate the guest experience.
Herbst joins Emeline and The Ryder Hotel with a distinguished background spanning lifestyle, boutique, and luxury hospitality. Over the years, Kevin has led multiple properties through periods of growth, brand evolution, and operational transformation, earning recognition for robust performance and team engagement.
“Kevin has an exceptional ability to balance brand integrity with operational excellence,” said Eric Gavin, president of Makeready. “His leadership style is rooted in collaboration and authenticity, making him a natural fit for Emeline and The Ryder Hotel as we continue to build upon their unique identities and connection to Charleston.”
In his new role, Herbst will focus on driving performance across both hotels while nurturing the culture that defines each property. His responsibilities include overseeing daily operations, supporting on-property leadership teams, and ensuring each guest interaction reflects warmth, creativity, and a true sense of place.
“I’m excited to step into this role and work alongside the talented teams at Emeline and The Ryder Hotel,” said Herbst. “These properties have a strong point of view and deep ties to their community. My goal is to support that foundation while continuing to create environments where both guests and team members feel genuinely welcomed and inspired.”
A graduate of Purdue University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Herbst is known for his commitment to mentorship and people development. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling, fishing, and restoring classic cars and boats – pastimes that reflect his appreciation for craftsmanship and character, values that resonate throughout both hotels.
