Joseph Bennett has announced his candidacy for the Charleston County School Board of Trustees, seeking to represent District 3.
Bennett grew up in a family of educators, has taught in public schools, private schools and at Trident Technical College, and is married to a longtime Charleston County educator. Together, they are raising children in Charleston County public schools.
"For my family, education has never just been a job. It has been a lifelong commitment," Bennett said. "As a parent, educator and current Constituent Board member, I've seen how important it is to have leaders who listen, make thoughtful decisions and keep students at the center of every conversation. That's why I'm running."
Bennett has served on the district's Constituent Board for the past four years, working with families, educators and community members on issues affecting local schools. In his professional career, he has spent nearly 20 years managing public programs and budgets, building experience in financial management, accountability and public service.
His wife has dedicated 18 years to Charleston County students, earning recognition as Charleston County School District Teacher of the Year before moving into a district leadership role supporting curriculum and instruction. Bennett said those experiences have reinforced his belief that teachers need strong support, families deserve a voice and students benefit when schools have clear priorities and responsible leadership.
If elected, Bennett said he will focus on expanding access to early childhood education, strengthening career and technical education opportunities, supporting and retaining excellent teachers, and ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly and transparently.
"I believe every child deserves the opportunity to succeed," Bennett said. "Our teachers deserve the resources and respect to do their best work, and our families deserve confidence that our schools are preparing students for whatever path they choose after graduation. I want to help build on the good work already happening while making thoughtful decisions that keep students first."
