MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — Google announced Monday a two-year, $9 billion investment in South Carolina to expand its cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure and support local workforce development programs.
The investment, planned for 2026–27, builds on Google’s 15-year presence in the state and further establishes South Carolina as a key hub in the nation’s digital economy.
“Google’s continued investment in South Carolina strengthens our position as a national leader in technology and innovation,” McMaster said. “Our partnership has created countless opportunities for our people and will continue to open new doors for growth and success.”
The funding will support the expansion of Google’s Berkeley County campus and continued development of two new data center campuses in Dorchester County, which broke ground in 2024 and are currently under construction.
Once complete, the new and expanded facilities will strengthen Google Cloud’s South Carolina region — part of the company’s global network of 42 cloud regions that deliver high-performance, low-latency services for businesses and organizations building AI-powered solutions.
The South Carolina region is connected to the Firmina and Nuvem subsea cables, both anchored in Myrtle Beach. These cables increase capacity, reliability and connectivity for Google users and Cloud customers across the Atlantic and around the world.
Google said it is also focused on helping South Carolinians access opportunities created by its technology investments. The company has funded local organizations that have trained more than 100,000 residents in digital skills.
On Monday, the Electrical Training Alliance, with support from Google.org’s AI Opportunity Fund, announced plans to integrate AI tools into its curriculum and expand the number of electrical apprentices in South Carolina. The initiative aims to train more than 160 apprentices by 2030, increasing the projected pipeline of new electricians in the state by nearly 150%.
In 2024 alone, Google said its technologies helped generate more than $6.4 billion in economic activity for South Carolina businesses, nonprofits, creators and developers.
“Google’s investment in South Carolina is a testament to our state’s vital role as a hub for America’s digital economy and a global leader in AI innovation,” said U.S. Sen. Tim Scott. “This expansion is welcome news that will strengthen our workforce and reinforce our position at the forefront of technology.”
Google also highlighted ongoing partnerships to improve energy efficiency and affordability across the state. Working with the South Carolina Office of Resilience, Sol Systems, Berkeley Electric Cooperative, Aiken Electric Cooperative and the Sustainability Institute, Google supports local organizations providing critical energy-efficiency upgrades for residents.
The initiative has resulted in average annual cost savings of $545 to $729 per household, depending on the community.
