The Charleston Center, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Town of James Island, and WakeUp Carolina are partnering to offer free overdose prevention and Narcan training for community members on Wednesday, May 20, at 6 p.m. at James Island Town Hall, located at 1122 Dills Bluff Road.
The training will teach attendees how to recognize the warning signs of an opioid overdose, respond during a suspected overdose emergency, and administer Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan. Participants will also learn about South Carolina’s Good Samaritan law, which provides legal protections for private citizens who provide life-saving assistance during an opioid overdose emergency.
Additionally, those who complete Wednesday’s training will receive a free overdose prevention kit containing two Narcan nasal sprays.
Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and restore normal breathing until emergency medical personnel can arrive and provide additional care. The medication is widely available throughout Charleston County and across South Carolina.
This free training is open to the public and is designed to equip community members with the knowledge and tools to help save lives during an overdose emergency.
While the training is free, attendees are encouraged to RSVP here so organizers can plan accordingly.
For more information about the training or other available programs and services, email, or call WakeUp Carolina at 843-972-8154.
The Charleston Center, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, and WakeUp Carolina are all Community Distributors of Naloxone. A full list of Community Distributors across South Carolina is available at JustPlainKillers.com.
