The newly constructed traffic circle at the Fort Johnson Road and Camp Road intersection will open to vehicle traffic on Monday, August 10. While construction will continue in the area, this milestone represents a significant step forward for the safety improvement project.
As the new school year begins, Charleston County Public Works is reminding students, families, and pedestrians that sidewalks near the intersection remain closed while pedestrian improvements are completed. While drivers will begin using the new traffic pattern Monday, pedestrians should continue to use the designated detour route along Seaside Lane between Dills Bluff Road and Fort Johnson Road (see attached) until sidewalk construction is complete.
Pedestrians should not enter the construction zone or attempt to navigate around closed sidewalks, as these areas are actively under construction.
Students and families who prefer to utilize Charleston County School District bus service can access route information and a bus stop locator here.
Construction crews will be working in the area most days from 6 a.m. until dusk. Drivers may continue using the intersection but should use caution, follow posted signage, and remain alert for construction activity.
The Fort Johnson Road at Camp Road intersection improvement project will reconfigure the intersection into a traversable urban compact roundabout designed to improve safety and efficiency for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Improvements include new sidewalks, ADA-accessible ramps, crosswalks, pedestrian refuge areas, and other enhanced safety features.
Electronic message boards will be in place along Fort Johnson Road and Camp Road to alert drivers to the new traffic pattern.
