On Friday, February 7, 2025, Palmetto Community Care will lead efforts to promote National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, engaging the entire Lowcountry community. This year’s theme, “Engage, Educate, Empower: Uniting to End HIV/AIDS in Black Communities,” highlights the importance of awareness, testing, and treatment in addressing the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black individuals.
According to the latest Epidemiologic Profile from the Department of Public Health (DPH), 62% of people living with HIV/AIDS in South Carolina identify as African American, despite making up only 26% of the state’s population. This disparity underscores the urgent need for increased education, testing, and access to care.
Alarmingly, in 2022, 25% of people living with HIV/AIDS in South Carolina did not receive medical care. Additionally, only 67% of newly diagnosed individuals were linked to medical care within one month, leaving one-third without essential treatment. Early detection through testing is a critical step in managing HIV/AIDS, allowing individuals to access treatment, protect their health, and prevent further transmission.
Breaking the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS is essential. By fostering open conversations, encouraging regular testing, and offering non-judgmental support, we can create a community where individuals feel empowered to seek the care they need without fear or shame.
To support this initiative, Palmetto Community Care will provide free HIV/STI testing on National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. As an added incentive, individuals who get tested will receive a $10 gift card.
Together, we can work toward a future where HIV/AIDS no longer disproportionately affects Black communities. Get tested. Get informed. Get involved.
