On Saturday, April 4, the family of Walter Scott will host a “Day of Grief Relief & Community Unity” in Park Circle to honor his life and remember others in the Lowcountry whose lives have been lost or forever changed by police violence. The gathering marks the 11th anniversary of Scott’s killing by a North Charleston police officer.
On April 4, 2015, Walter Scott, a 50-year-old father and Coast Guard veteran, was shot multiple times in the back during a traffic stop by a North Charleston police officer. Video of the incident drew national attention, sparking widespread calls for accountability and police reform and becoming a defining moment in the national conversation on racial justice and policing.
Organizers say the event is intended not only as a memorial, but also as a space for healing, connection, and collective support.
Families impacted by police violence or in-custody deaths are especially encouraged to attend and connect with community resources available at the event.
The program will include a remembrance ceremony recognizing those lost to police violence in the region, along with opportunities for fellowship, food, art and activities for children. Resources for impacted families will also be available onsite, including access to therapists and legal support.
Attendees are asked to bring canned and non-perishable food items to be donated to participating community organizations.
