Press Release
Dorchester Two Educational Foundation announced the three inaugural winners of the Joseph R. Pye Legacy Scholarship.
The Foundation awarded the $1,000 scholarship to a student from each high school in Dorchester School District Two. They are all aspiring educators:
- Ashley Ridge High School Zachary Lloyd Coastal Carolina University for Music Education
- Fort Dorchester High School Eileen Cole Winthrop University for Early Childhood Education
- Summerville High School Lauren Sayetta Charleston Southern University for Music Education
Sayetta
The Foundation partnered with DDTwo to establish the scholarship to honor the legacy of Mr. Joe Pye, former DDTwo Superintendent, who retired in 2022 after serving in public education for 52 years. Community scholarship sponsors include the Larry & Rebecca Collett Foundation, which made a generous multi-year commitment to sustain the scholarship.
The Foundation was honored to have Mr. Pye present the awards to recipients.
“It’s quite an honor to have the Foundation and District recognize my service to education and to encourage the next generation to enter the profession,” Mr. Pye says. “Hopefully, they will come back and teach for DDTwo and take the baton. It’s all about passion and the desire to do their best.”

Mr. Ralph Hayes, Foundation Executive Director, says, “We are humbled to honor Mr. Pye and to help future educators on their journey to the classroom. We look forward to seeing the recipients change students' lives in the future as Mr. Pye did for so many.”
