Dorchester County continues to be under a state of emergency until Sunday, Jan. 26. While wintry precipitation has concluded, a Cold Weather Advisory will be in effect from tonight at midnight to Friday at 8 a.m. Wind chills will decrease to 15 to 20 degrees overnight, which could cause melted snow or ice to refreeze areas throughout the county. This will cause areas of black ice and dangerous driving conditions. Residents are encouraged to avoid traveling until conditions improve.
Due to the inclement weather and expected morning road conditions on Friday, Dorchester County Government Administrative Offices, Courts, and Libraries will have a delayed opening of noon on Friday, Jan. 24.
Dorchester County Parks will be closed on Friday.
The county’s solid waste hauler typically services solid waste at the County’s Convenience Centers on Wednesdays, but was unable to due to the storm. Due to this delay, the County Convenience Centers will reopen on Saturday, Jan. 25. at 9 a.m.
Dorchester Seniors, Inc., with facilities in Summerville and St. George will be closed on Friday and reopen on Monday.
Dorchester School District 2 (DD2) and Dorchester School District 4 will have elearning instruction on Friday. DD2 has canceled all school weekend activities.
Road Updates
Through a memorandum of understanding with South Carolina Department of Transportation, Dorchester County maximized the use of county resources, specific to clearing snow from roadways, during the winter storm.
South Carolina Department of Transportation, Dorchester County Department of Public Works, and Oconee County crews cleared more than 50 roads. Crews will continue to work overnight and into the weekend until road hazards have been substantially mitigated.
Dorchester County Water and Sewer, Facilities and Grounds, and Public Works worked diligently to clear parking lot of the County Government parking lots and sidewalks at St. George and Summerville locations.
Residents are encouraged to be cautious on the roads as crews continue to clear the roadways.
