This week, Charleston County Council awarded the contract to begin construction of the Woodland Shores Road Complete Streets and Maybank Highway Midblock Crossing Project. The contract was awarded to Gulf Stream Construction Company, Inc. in the amount of $3,673,611.68.
The project is designed to improve safety and connectivity for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists in the area and will include:
- Approximately 5,500 linear feet of new sidewalk (varying width) on Woodland Shores Road and Maybank Highway
- Approximately 5,000 linear feet of new, improved stormwater drainage pipes
- Installation of a new mid-block crossing on Maybank Highway with high visibility flashing Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons and a center island refuge
- A new raised landscaped median with fencing to prevent crossing in unsafe areas
"This project is a vital step forward in addressing safety concerns that have weighed heavily on this community," said County Councilmember Jenny Costa Honeycutt, whose district encompasses the project area. "These improvements will provide much-needed safety and connectivity for everyone who lives, works, and travels throughout this area, and I’m proud to see Charleston County taking action to protect lives and enhance mobility in our area."
Project funding includes $2,924,000 in federal funding via a CHATS grant, $731,000 in state gas tax funds administered by the Charleston Transportation Committee, and $18,611.68 allocated by the Transportation Sales Tax Annual Allocation Program.
County officials will announce plans for a community information meeting prior to the start of construction, which is anticipated to begin in the next six to eight weeks.
