During their meeting last night, Charleston County Council unanimously authorized a contract award for the Phillips Community Drainage Improvements Project, which will bring significant flooding relief to the 260-acre drainage basin.
As part of the project, crews will widen and re-grade the area’s mile-long drainage canal, which will significantly increase flow capacity and better manage the influx of stormwater. Additionally, more than 1,000 feet of new, upsized drainage pipes will be installed at seven major road crossings throughout the area to help eliminate bottlenecks from the existing undersized pipes.
Crews will begin implementing these improvements downstream, which will create additional flow capacity at the outfalls, bringing residents immediate flooding relief as work continues upstream.
To increase access and enable effective future maintenance, crews will clear a 20-foot maintenance shelf of vegetative obstructions and other blockages along the length of the canal.
“This project will deliver fast, effective flooding relief to the residents of the Phillips Community and significantly enhance the resilience of the historic neighborhood. Projects like these demonstrate our ongoing commitment to replacing aging infrastructure and improving quality of life for residents across Charleston County,” said County Councilmember and Planning and Public Works Committee Chair Brantley Moody. “I’m grateful to our Stormwater team for getting the ball rolling and look forward to seeing these upgrades put in place.”
Construction is set to begin in October and last about six months.
The project contract was awarded to Gulf Stream Construction Company, Inc. in the amount of $2,366,853.21.
