As work advances on the Maybank Highway and Woodland Shores Complete Streets project, construction of the planned Maybank Highway safety improvements is set to begin on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
These improvements are expected to be completed within two months and include:
- A new mid-block pedestrian crossing on Maybank Highway with high visibility Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons and a center island refuge
- A new raised landscaped median with fencing to prevent crossing in unsafe areas
- 500 linear feet of new sidewalk on Maybank Highway
While construction on Maybank Highway is underway, intermittent nighttime lane closures will be in place between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., with at least one lane open in each direction at all times.
Work on Woodland Shores Road is nearing completion and the remainder of the sidewalk and drainage work is expected to be finished in spring 2026.
The Maybank Highway and Woodland Shores Complete Streets project is designed to improve safety and connectivity for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists. Project funding includes a combination of federal funds via a CHATS grant, state gas tax funds administered by the Charleston Transportation Committee, and Transportation Sales Tax Annual Allocation Program funds.
