The City of Charleston today released the following statement after two people were injured in a horse-drawn carriage incident Monday morning:
"This morning, a serious carriage incident occurred near the intersection of Cumberland and Church streets.
"During the incident, the carriage operator and one passenger were thrown from the carriage. Both individuals sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. Other passengers aboard the carriage were uninjured. An unoccupied parked vehicle was also struck by the carriage and sustained minor damage. Following the incident, the horse was safely secured and is being evaluated as well.
"Our thoughts are with the operator and passenger who were injured and everyone affected by this incident, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
"We are grateful to the Charleston Police Department, the Charleston Fire Department, EMS personnel, and the bystanders who responded quickly to assist those involved.
"The City is actively reviewing the circumstances surrounding this incident to determine exactly what occurred. Out of respect for those affected and to preserve the integrity of that review, we will not speculate on the cause at this time. Additional information will be released as it becomes available."
