The City of Charleston on Monday morning hosted a groundbreaking to celebrate entering the final phase of the Huger Street and King Street Pump Station. Upon completion, this pump station will increase flow out of the intersection by 70,000 gallons of water per minute, significantly reducing the flooding impacts that often affect the area.
To help commemorate the occasion, several leaders from the community were in attendance, including former District 3 Councilmember James Lewis Jr. During his term on Charleston City Council, Councilmember Lewis helped get this project off the ground.
Mayor William Cogswell, Councilmember Robert Mitchell, Director of Stormwater Management Matt Fountain, and CEO of Charleston Housing Authority Art Milligan all gave remarks, focusing on the important role this project will play in flood mitigation, and how the pump station will serve as an amenity to the surrounding community.
Construction is expected to take around 18 months to complete.
