In honor of the International Ride of Silence, Charleston Moves is hosting a local rolling memorial for the community members who have been killed and injured while bicycling, due to traffic violence. This critical mass ride will cover main corridors of the peninsula, highlighting areas with both scheduled and needed safety improvements. This is a signature Charleston Moves event that embodies the urgent nature of their advocacy, and the community is encouraged to participate.
Starting and ending at Palmetto Brewing Company, participants will bicycle a 5-mile route on the peninsula with a police escort. The ride will conclude with a social hour to build community and share opportunities for the public to engage in action items and become advocates for a more walkable, bikeable Charleston County.
Don't have a bike? Lime is offering pedal-assist bicycles and helmets for the ride, free of charge.
The Charleston-North Charleston metro region ranks as the 9th most dangerous in the nation for people walking. Furthermore, from 2018-2023, approximately 115 traffic fatalities occurred in the City of Charleston; over 40% of these fatalities were people on bicycles or on foot. Action is needed! Redesigning roadways to safety accommodate all modes will not only save lives, but also increases quality of life and public health. It is the kind of investment that generates enormous returns for all.
In addition to their Ride of Silence event on May 21, Charleston Moves is hosting Bike to Work Day events on May 16, and their annual Light The Night event on May 31. Check out the schedule to join.
