Charleston Moves, which advocates for safe, connected and equitable mobility for all, hosts Mobility Month, a celebration of safe streets, each May. This year’s program is particularly special, as Charleston Moves will commemorate its 20th anniversary.
With the belief that you should be safe to move how you choose, where you choose, and when you choose, the nonprofit organization’s event series aims to rally the community around mobility priorities and opportunities to advocate, while celebrating infrastructure wins. This year’s program, with generous support from sponsors and community partners, presents:
- May 1 | 20th Anniversary Ride » Celebratory bicycle ride from the Cooper River to Ashley River and back, commemorating Charleston Moves’ bridge building legacy, with a post-ride happy hour (RSVP and required waiver)
- May 7 | What’s Under the Streets of Charleston? » Presentation by Dr. Nic Butler of the Charleston County Public Library on the curious variety of antique layers deposited beneath Charleston’s streets over the past two centuries, and strategies for facilitating movement (RSVP)
- May 16 | Bike to Work Day » Morning coffee commute and evening happy hour gatherings to celebrate the joy of bicycling to work, and beyond (RSVP)
- May 21 | Ride of Silence » Critical mass memorial bicycle ride on the peninsula to honor community members who have been killed and injured due to traffic violence, and shine a light on areas with both scheduled and needed safety improvements (RSVP and required waiver)
- May 31 | Light The Night » Free bicycle light giveaway and community fair in North Charleston, aimed at reducing barriers to safety, encouraging safe cycling trips, and connecting the community with resources (RSVP)
Charleston Moves is a nonprofit organization that advocates for bicycle, pedestrian and public transit infrastructure and policies across Charleston County. We envision a connected community where safe transportation choice enhances access to essential resources like food, healthcare and employment, fostering equity and well-being for all.
