The latest forecast from the National Weather Service continues to predict record low temperatures and 3-4 inches of snowfall this weekend, with up to 6 inches possible in parts of the county.
The combination of rain, snow, and extreme cold is expected to create icy roadway conditions as overnight temperatures drop tonight and tomorrow. Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads if possible and use extreme caution if travel is necessary.
A Winter Storm Warning and Extreme Cold Watch remain in effect for Charleston County.
County Response and Resources
The Community Information Line is open at (843) 746-3900 and will remain staffed until 6 p.m. tonight. It will reopen at 8 a.m. tomorrow to provide updates and answer questions regarding the storm.
Charleston County Public Works crews have begun 24-hour salting operations and will assist SCDOT through the night with a focus on interstates and bridges.
County public safety leaders are operating under Unified Command and refining their response as weather conditions evolve.
“We’re currently seeing higher-than-normal demand for service, and our teams are triaging calls based on urgency and available resources.” said Charleston County EMS Chief Chris Way. “Every call will be answered as soon as resources allow. The safety of our residents, and the first responders serving them, remains our number one priority.”
The following Charleston County parking garages are open for residents to park their cars for free until 10 a.m. Monday:
- 90 Cumberland Street
- 85 Queen Street
County Operations
The Bees Ferry Landfill, Materials Recovery Facility, and all county Convenience Centers closed at 11 a.m. today and will remain closed Sunday. A determination regarding Monday’s operations will be made tomorrow.
Due to the threat of severe winter weather, all Charleston County Public Library branches and offices, including book drops/material returns, will remain closed this weekend. Library officials will continue to monitor the weather and announce additional closures, if needed.
All Charleston County Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed Saturday and Sunday. A determination regarding Monday’s operations will be made Sunday.
Due to anticipated winter weather impacts, Bond Court will hold a remote hearing at 1 p.m., Sunday, February 1.
To facilitate timely hearings, law enforcement agencies are asked to scan and submit all required bond documentation to bondcourt@charlestoncounty.org by 10 a.m. on the day of the hearing.
