During their meeting last night, Charleston County Council unanimously authorized a contract award to implement a series of roadway and drainage improvements along Central Park Road between Riverland Drive and Fleming Road. The project will bring significant flooding relief to the surrounding area, which is heavily impacted by spring and king tide events.
The project includes raising Central Park Road up to two feet throughout the project corridor and installing three upsized drainage pipes measuring 48 inches in diameter. The new pipes will be outfitted with two tide gates and one tidal check valve, which block incoming tides exceeding normal high tide elevations.
Together, these measures will prevent roadway flooding caused by the nearby James Island Creek, provide greater flow capacity, allow continual saltwater exchange through the crossing, and increase stormwater storage upstream.
“For too long, flooding along Central Park Road has disrupted daily life, making travel unsafe and unpredictable,” said Charleston County Councilmember Joe Boykin. “These improvements will deliver much-needed relief to those who depend on this corridor, and I’m grateful to everyone who’s worked so hard to make this project a reality.”
The Central Park Road Improvements Project contract was awarded to Truluck Construction, Inc. in the amount of $2,718,669.
Project funding comes from a combination of federal grant funds, state gas tax funds administered by the Charleston Transportation Committee, and county stormwater funds.
Construction is set to begin in two to three months.
