Today, Charleston County and Charleston Redevelopment Corporation leaders announced that the second round of Affordable Housing Land Acquisition Grants are now available. The announcement was made at the Canopy on Ashley apartments, a former market-rate property in North Charleston that used a first-round award to successfully renovate and transition to attainable housing.
First launched in August 2024 in partnership with CRC, the Affordable Housing Land Acquisition Grant Program is designed to secure land for affordable housing development throughout the county.
During the first application cycle, Charleston County Council awarded $1.1M to three projects that will result in 32 attainable rental units and up to 12 attainable homeowner units for periods of at least 20 to 30 years.
Non-profit and for-profit organizations with experience developing affordable housing are invited to apply for this round of land acquisition grants, which will support a variety of infill and multifamily rental and homeownership opportunities in Charleston County. Applications can be completed here.
Maximum awards will vary based on project specifications but are intended not to exceed $250,000 for infill projects and $500,000 for multifamily projects. In total, County Council has allocated $2,500,000 for land acquisition as part of the program. $1,400,000 is available for the current application cycle.
The initial submission deadline is 12 p.m., June 23, 2025, with rolling applications being accepted until all funding is committed. All funded projects must execute a contract agreeing to a minimum 20-year affordability period.
