Charleston City Hall will be illuminated in yellow on Jan. 27 in observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Charleston.
The illumination honors the memory of the six million Jews and millions of others murdered during the Holocaust and reaffirms the city’s commitment to remembrance, education and standing against hate.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day, observed annually on Jan. 27, marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and serves as a global moment of reflection and resolve to confront antisemitism, hatred and bigotry.
For centuries, Charleston has been a welcoming home to Jewish life and culture, with one of the longest continuous Jewish communities in North America. Following the Holocaust, many survivors found refuge in Charleston, rebuilding their lives and contributing to the city’s civic, cultural and religious fabric.
The yellow illumination symbolizes remembrance and resilience. It references the yellow badges Jews were forced to wear under Nazi persecution, while reclaiming the color as a symbol of dignity, survival and collective responsibility to remember.
Charleston City Hall is located at 80 Broad St.
