Charleston Animal Society is mobilizing to help animals affected by the devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10.
The powerful earthquake caused widespread destruction across western Colombia, claiming hundreds of lives, injuring thousands and leaving hundreds of people missing. The disaster has also had a devastating impact on animals, with animal shelters damaged or destroyed and thousands of dogs and cats now in urgent need of food, shelter and basic supplies.
In response, Charleston Animal Society is sponsoring an emergency supply drive through Friday at 3 p.m. to help provide critical supplies to animal welfare teams working on the ground in Colombia.
Community members can donate leashes, collars, harnesses, crates and pet food at the Charleston Animal Society campus, located at 2455 Remount Road in North Charleston.
“Animals are among the most vulnerable victims of a disaster like this, and they have no way to ask for help,” said Charleston Animal Society President and CEO Joe Elmore, CAWA. “We know that animal lovers in our community will want to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people and animals of Colombia during this incredibly difficult time. Even a simple leash, bag of food or crate can make an enormous difference when animals are frightened, displaced and in desperate need of care.”

Every item donated will help provide emergency assistance to animals and the teams working tirelessly to keep them safe.
