Charleston County: The Charleston County Medical Society’s (CCMS) School Health Committee plays a vital advisory role in shaping Charleston County School District’s (CCSD) health and wellness efforts. The CCMS School Health Committee acts as an advisory board to CCSD and works closely with district leaders to promote healthier school environments for students, staff, and communities.
A Year of Growth and Participation
One of the CCMS School Health Committee’s standout efforts is the School-Based Wellness Initiative, an annual program designed to encourage schools to prioritize wellness activities and build a culture of health. The 2024–2025 initiative saw widespread participation and meaningful impact across the district:
Forty-eight schools participated in the School-Based Wellness Initiative, engaging in projects like sensory gardens to promote mental and emotional well-being. Of those, 43 schools earned a Wellness Award for fostering a healthy school culture.
A total of $28,100 was awarded to CCSD schools to support these wellness projects and future health-focused programs.
Collaboration Makes a Difference
Strengthening the impact of the School-Based Wellness Initiative, 26 schools had a health professional serving on their Wellness Committees this year. This impactful step integrates professional health insight into school wellness planning.
The collaboration between educators and medical professionals reflects the CCMS School Health Committee’s mission to ensure that expert medical guidance informs school health policy and practice.
