Central Park Road will close to vehicular traffic between Riverland Drive and Riverland Drive beginning Tuesday, Jan. 6, as crews enter the final phase of the Central Park Road Drainage Improvements Project.
This final stretch of work will include the installation of tidal gates to control water flow, construction of sidewalks between Riverland Drive and Fleming Road, and placement of final asphalt surface. The road closure will remain in place through project completion, which is anticipated in late February.
Detours will be in place to safely guide motorists through the project area while work is underway. As always, motorists are asked to use caution while traveling through the area.
About the project:
The Central Park Road Drainage Improvements Project includes a series of roadway and drainage upgrades along Central Park Road between Riverland Drive and Fleming Road. These improvements are designed to provide significant flood relief to the surrounding area, which is heavily impacted by spring tides and king tide events.
As part of the project, Central Park Road has been raised by as much as 2 feet throughout the corridor. Three 48-inch drainage pipes have also been installed, which will be equipped with two tidal gates and one tidal check valve to prevent incoming tides that exceed normal high-tide elevations.
Funding for the project is provided through a combination of federal grant funds, state gas tax funds administered by the Charleston Transportation Committee, and county stormwater funds.
